Spoilers below They sound cooooooolllll
At Riker's, Sheldon gets the same message when Shane Casey, wearing a suit and tie, shows up for a visit posing as a lawyer. An agitated Hawkes tries to convince the guard that Casey is wanted for murder, but the guard doesn't buy it. As Sheldon begs for a phone call, he's taken away. Casey yells out, "Trust in the system Sheldon." Casey has one thing on his mind: to make Sheldon pay for the death of his brother, who committed suicide after being convicted of murder.
Mac visits Sheldon and they go over the details of Sheldon's night. That is when Hawkes remembers that just before he was caught, a drunk ran into him. Not only is it possible that it was Casey who put the cash into Hawkes' pocket, it's probable. As they're talking, Mac gets a note to meet the next day, a note which reads, "I hold the key to freedom."
On his way into the lab, Mac runs into Peyton. Though she's unhappy about it, "I'm sorry" just isn't enough to move past what happened between them yesterday. Peyton's tired of being the office secret and lets Mac down gently. He's not ready for a relationship and she knows it, a fact made abundantly clear when he accidentally calls her "Claire." It's over between them, for good.
Lindsay has a few details to share with Stella and Danny about their peep show victim, whom Stella is convinced is involved in Hawkes' case. He had green clothing dye on his skin, as well as gravitational disinfectant drops that fell as someone knelt over him. Maybe Tom, aka the owner of Peeking Tom's, was a little more involved than he pretended.
Danny and Angell lean on Tom for info, and he reveals that to keep his reputation clean (so to speak) he removed the needle from the dead junkie's arm, as well as a ring on a chain that was next to the body. Danny takes the ring as evidence.
Mac arrives at the location Shane Casey indicated in his note, and he gets a phone call on his cell. But the phone isn't his--someone dropped it in his pocket only moments earlier, someone like Shane Casey. Casey lures Mac into an elevator as Don and Stella look on covertly. Mac watches Shane, gun in hand, ascending to the 25th floor in a neighboring glass elevator. The gun will clear Sheldon, and all Shane wants in return is evidence that will exonerate his dead brother. With that Shane takes off, cleverly escaping the police perimeter surrounding the building.
Stella works the cell phone that Mac received from Casey to zero in on the signal of Shane's phone. Since Shane's cell is still powered up, she triangulates the location and finds that he's still in Manhattan. Meanwhile, Mac looks up all he can on Ian Casey, Shane's dead brother, who was convicted of the murder of bartender Eric Dalton. From a newspaper photo, Danny recognizes the ring from Peeking Tom's as one Eric Dalton wore before his death. He's just realized that Ian Casey was guilty of murder after all.
Lindsay adds that the GSR from the peep show junkie matches that from Kelly Jones' bullet wound. The junkie was the shooter, and he matches the description of Sheldon perfectly. Shane Casey needed to find someone desperate enough for cash to make the kill and set up Hawkes, and he found the perfect target. Afterwards, Casey killed the junkie and took his clothes, accidentally dropping what he thought was his brother's ring during the scuffle. Then he made contact with Sheldon and the trap was set. It's compelling evidence, but they need the final piece of the puzzle: the murder weapon. And Shane Casey has it.
A beeping breaks the moment; the computer has located Shane Casey's cell signal down to the exact location. It's the scene where Ian Casey committed his murder. Mac's phone gets a text message to meet, but it's Danny, not Mac, that Shane wants to speak to. Shane has a connection with Danny, who once spoke kindly to the killer about "going to bat for your brother."
Don and Mac flank Danny before he heads into the pub, now closed down. Danny, wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying an evidence kit, heads in, only to be scared out of his wits when the jukebox starts up. Shane is holding the gun, and he's acting crazy, demanding that Danny work the scene of his brother's alleged crime. But when Danny reveals that the very ring Shane's been carrying around really belonged to his brother's murder victim, Shane falls apart. Danny kicks the gun away, slowly leading Shane out of the building into the waiting swarm of police.
That night, Sheldon makes the long walk out of jail, greeted by a smiling Stella. He's free.
