There are some ways to get past Steam. Ironically, the major anti-Steam movement is lead anonymously by some insider at Valve.
Personally though, Steam isn't as bad as it was before. You can play Steam offline, and now Steam only takes up to around 5 MB when it is minimized in the tray.

Stop complaining. You pay Valve to shove their <deleted>, so you have the option of not paying. Their world does not revolve around the ten bucks you spent to get Half-Life 2 from the bargain bin.
